Meiland Discussion Questions from Group 6 (Pgs 27-31)

Choose one question to respond to, or you can respond to what someone else has posted:

1. A stupid question is defined as "a question that you hesitate to ask during class (or even after class) because you feel that the other students already know the answer from reading the text or listening to the lecture, and thus your question would simply waste class time" (p28, lines 21-23). Have you ever felt you had a stupid question you were afraid to ask? What did you do?

2. "Will this be on the exam?" (p30, line 15) is considered to be a bad question. Have you ever asked this type of question? If so, how did your teacher respond?

3. Meiland defines bad students as those "who do not participate sufficiently in their own education and who do not actively demand enough from their teachers" (p31, lines 2-3). Have you ever behaved this way? Did you think you were behaving badly?

I have asked this kind of question many times in my high school days. Teachers hardly told us what will be on exams and often said study everything decided books or texts. I was so stupid!!!

  2. I also choose no.2.
When I was a high school student, I often asked this question. When I asked this question, teachers said they could not answer this question. I think there are two reasons why teachers did not answer this question. First, they thought it would be inequality if they answered this question, because every student take the same exam. Second, they thought results of exams are not purpose of our study.

  3. Thank you for postng comments, Keisuke and Natumi. Your experiments were so interesting. Now, I want to ask a question for both of you guys. Now you know that that kind of question is stupid, but when you ware high school student, I guess you did not know that. I did not either. So how did you feel when you were in a high school and when your high school theachers did not answer what is on the exam.

When I was a high school students, I asked that question many times in class. My teacher said," If I sayed no, you would not listen to my lecture. So, The only one ward I can say is YES." Now I realize that studying is for me not for exams. So, this question is nonsence.

  6. I have a question to Satoshi's opinion. You've written your teacher said " If I sayed no, you would not listen to my lecture. So, The only one ward I can say is YES." But I cannot understand this sentences. Please explain more detail.

  7. Thank you for your comment, Satoshi.
You realized a very impotant point. As you said, studying is not for exams but for you!

  8. I answer Keisuke's question.

If my teacher sayed NO, we would think that this lecture was useless and we would sleep or do anything without listening to the lecture.
When I was high school student, I think the reason my teacher said so is that he wanterd us to listen to his lecture. However, I change my mind now.

    Yes, I have.
I often couldn't ask the question because I thought what I want to know is familiar to others.
    I really regret that.
I should have ask more question.

I felt it might be a stupid question many times. I often hesitated to ask during classes especially which subject I'm good at because I was ashamed if others thought I don't know such a basic thing. Therefore, I research for answer with textbook on my own. However, I think it is a waste of time now.

Yes!! I have asked this type of question. When I asaked question, my teachers did not tell me anything of tests and they looked unpleasant. However I keep asking this question afterwards... I think I was a bad student.

I always felt these feelings in my high school days. If all syudents seemed to be understand, I could not ask a question to a teacher. Therefore,I always try to find answer by myself or ask question to classmate after class. However, now,I will try to more question.

  15. Thank you for your comment, Shunsuke, but I have a question. Why do you think could you change your mind? Why did you become able to try to question?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Shunsuke, I understand.

In my high school, or prep school, I sometimes felt these feelings, too. In my case, if the questions are difficult, I ask the teacher. But when they are easy, I hesitated to ask.

When I was a high school student, we always asked this kind of question before exams. Some teachers said 'yes', but other teachers said 'all what I taught you will be on tests.'

  18. I understand Maya.

In my high school, most of my tests covered all what I learned in the term, so It was no use asking those questions.

I asked this kind of question many times when I was a high school student. My teachers of cource said "I cannot tell you." But when I showed them how much I studied, they sometimes gave me some hints for the exam we were going to take.

  20. When I look so far, most of AB students have asked a question such as No.2.

Is there a student who have not asked such as a question? I have not seen such a student around me.

  21. I agree with Takayuki.
All students want to know whether the things will be on tests or not. It is because every students want to get good scare. I think , however, if teachers answer this kind of question , the exam will become meaningless thing.

When we asked teachers if it would be on the exam in high school, one of our teachers said that it was not important to get good score, but to get deeply understanding.
So we will be able to get good score if we understand clearly.

  23. Thank you for respond,Riku and Masanori.
    I answer Riku's question.
Asking question is heavy work for me,but when I read this Meiland'opinion, I found that hesitating to ask is useless and my feeling is misguided.I also find there are tutorial times! Therefore I deside to ask question.

  24. I want to respond to Takayuki.
I haven't asked such a question like "Will this be on the exam?" because of these two reasons. One is that I don't want to be regarded me as a bad student by teachers.I mean students who don't have no enthusiasm by bad students.Second is that I want to test my real academic ability.Exams in school are paractices of an entrance exam which we can't ask "What is on the exam?", I have never asked such a question.

  25. Im sorry not to respond recently.
I chose #3. I have behaved such way (do not participate sufficiently in their own education and who do not actively demand enough from their teachers) especially in high school. I usually slept in classes. I could not defeat my greed for sleeping. I feel regret for that, and I try to participate in class in university.

  26. I disgree with Takayuki`s idea a little bit...
I have never seen people who do not ask teacher such questions in junior high school and high school. However in university, exams are usually essay form, so we cold not ask such questins and I have never seen such people in university.

I also behaved like Mika in high school. I usually slept and couldn’t concentrate on my classes. I didn’t participant sufficiently in my education then. Now, I understand Meiland’s opinion and I try to change my attitude to learning.

  28. Sorry for commenting late!!
I thought this time's questions are so interesting! I felt I want to answer to all of them!
    but I will choose No.1.
When I was in a high school, I always thought about this problem, especially in math classes.
Because all o my friends were sitting with nomal face, I thought they were understanding, and I hesitated to ask questions during class. So I asked my friends about the problem, then I realize that she didn't understand, neither. So since then, I try to ask questions during the class.

  29. Thank you for respond, Riku.
Yes, I ask the teachers a lot.
After entering university, I came to think that asking the teachers what I do not know is the best way to understand deeply and quickly.
Therefore, I make the best use of tutrial time.

I felt that too at ICU because the class was sooo fast to me and I thought everyone could understand whole things, so I couldn't ask teachers.
But I'll try to ask questions in next term!!!
