1. Humanities contain subjects such as art, languages, literature, history etc. Meiland says "What is required in the humanities...is not proof but sensitivity" (P25, lines 14-15) . Explain why "sensitivity" and not real proof is needed when we search for truth in the humanities.
2. For us in the humanities, sensitivity is very important. According to Meiland, "sensitivity can be cultivated" (p25, line 33). How can we cultivate our "sensitivity"? Give an example.
3. Meiland says that "Even though we cannot prove that one interpretation or opinion is better than another, nevertheless some are better because they are more sensitive and insightful"(P26, lines 16-18). Do you think it is true? If so, please give an example and explain the reason.

ReplyDeleteWhen we talk with other people, or watch TV or movies, try to think as if you were in the other people's posirion or situation. When I was in high school, I was a captain of the brass band so I try to take care not only club but also band members. I always tried to be in other position and think how they feel, and this made my sensitivity stronger because I could share the feeling with other people.
I chose 2nd question.
ReplyDeleteI think things what Fumika said is important. In addition to that, I think visiting museums or visiting many countries and learning different cultures can also curtivate our sensitivity.
I thank you for your comment, Fumika. Your opinion is easy to understand because you have made an example with your own experience. I think trying to think from other people's standpoint is very important, too. Good point.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, Haruna. I can understand almost all of your opinion, but I cannot catch why learning different cultures is related to cultivate our sensitivity. Please give a little more explanation.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Fumika and Haruna.I think it is important that appreciate arts like movies or pictures. Moreover I also believe volunteer works cultivate our sensitivity. When I was a high school student, I was involved in some volunteer works and administered to people. I got opportunities think about cooperation to live in society. And I feel my sensitivity was cultivated through the activities.
Thank you for posting comments.
ReplyDeleteI think all people choosed question 2.
Please answer other questions if you can.
Responce to Keisuke!
ReplyDeleteKnowing other cultures helps to cultivate our sensibility because it can keep our viewpoint widely. For example, if foreign artists did not learn about Japanese art, they would not know that there are other ways to draw a picture like "Ukiyoe" So they also need to learn other cultures.
I almost understand what you want to say, Haruna. Thank you for your response.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Fumika.Trying to be in other position and think how they feel are important things.I think it's also important to know how they feel actually by communicating with them. This is because we can't know what others think without talking with them. And when we can know it, our sensitivity will be cultivated.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Riku. Thinking what others feel in communication is a best way to know how they feel actually by communicating with them. The process of this work helps our sensitivity to be cultivated.

ReplyDeleteIn humanities, according to Meiland, not everyone will be convinced about particular statement, they will say only OK, and they cannot say reasonable proof because the reason is sensitive, it has no good reason, so people can only feel it and use weak sense of proof. That is why I think sensitivity is necessary in humanities.
Thank you for your comment,Shunsuke.
ReplyDeleteI can understand your opinion. I agree with your opinion. I think you have good point.
I thank you for Takayuki and Riku. You have almost same opinion. You two think communication with others is so important.

ReplyDeleteMeeting new people is the most good ways to cultivate our sensitivity because in my experience, the way of thinking and the point of view are almost same, but when I meet new people and talk with them, then I can think more deeply and widly.
So, at ICU I'm trying to make a lot of friends!
Thank you for your comment Yumena. I do agree with your opinion. I wanna make many friends too!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Haruna's opinion. She said visiting museums can cultivate our sensitivity. Moreover I think drawing is also effective way. It is because we watch things more carefully before or during drawing.
Maya's opinion is unique. But I have a question to your opinion. You've said 'we watch things more carefully before or during drawing'. I think this kind of drawing is 'sketching'. We can be more sensitive to the world around us in sketching I think but we can't extemd our sensitivity in that. 'Become more sensitive' and 'cultivate sensitivity' are completely different to each other. Can you understand what I wanna say? And how do you think about mine?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Keisuke.
ReplyDeleteI can understand what you want to say.
I think 'become more sensitive' is one of the lessons for 'cultivate sensitivity' and the first step to cultivate sensitivity. If we don't see carefully and try to know anything, we won't be able to understand them.

ReplyDeleteI think one way of cultivating our sensitivity is to be active. For example, we shold go hiking, go to see a movie or musical and visit museums. We can cultivate sensitivity by touching something remoted from our daily lives which are controled by convenient things.

ReplyDeleteI learned pottery making, and through this learning, I can cultivate my sensitivity for pottery making much.
After taking the class of pottery making, I went to the department store with mother to buy rice ball, and went to several exhibitions of pottery in the museums.
In the class of pottery making, when the other students are absent, there were only the instructor and me, and he showed me how to knead the clay, and I followed exactly what he did.
That helped me a lot.
Thank you for posting,Asuka and Masanori.
ReplyDeleteAsuka,I agree with your opinion, but are there any connections between seeing movie or musical and daily lives that are controlled by convenient things?
Masanori,I think you have a good experience to cultivate your sensitivity.I was convinced!

ReplyDeleteI think searching for truth in the humanities is very difficult, because in the humanities, standards for decision depend on sensitivity. Everyone has their own emotion and these are never same. In humanities,I think it is impossible to find the truth like a formula.
I choose No.2.
ReplyDeleteI think we can cultivate our sensitivity by accepting other countries' cultures flexibly and communicating with others.
Because cultivating our sensitivity means almost the same as having flexibility to others.
Therefore those ways help us.
Sorry to late but I want to think about No.3
ReplyDeleteI think it is true. For example, some professionals of traditional craft can decide lot’s of integrants by many years of effort and instinct. That effort and instinct are so sensitive and come from a keen insight but don’t have any numeric proves or scientific proves in most situations.
So I think that is true.
