1. Meiland said readers should ask and answer 7 questions during the process of reading (p18-19). Are there any other questions that you ask and answer when reading a text?
2. Meiland mentioned that, "a good piece of writing can produce the same types of feelings and experiences that a beautiful painting can produce" (20, line 10). Have you ever had an experience like this? If you have, what kind of book?
3. There are 7 questions to ask and answer when reading, and Meiland said No.7 (include a counter argument and refutation) is most important (P19, line 4). Which of these questions do you think is the second most important? Why do you think so?

I chose #3
ReplyDeleteI think the second most important question is #1.
We need to think what our position is before reading the author's opinion because If we read first and then try to think our position, some authors opinion affect us and it would be hard to think our own idea. So we should think what question or problem is the text dealing with and take our position first, then we shold start to read author's idea.
I choose no.2.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a junior-high student, I read a book whose name is 'Gingatetsudou No Yoru' written by Kenji Miyazawa. His sentences are so imaginative and sensuous. I was so impressed and cried. I felt the same feeling when I saw 'La Nascita di Venere' painted by Sandro Botticelli in Italy.
I choose no.3.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Fumika`s opinion.
I think it is also important to know the quality of evidence used to support the position(question 4), but the most important thing is to understand what question or problems is the text dealing with. This is the first step to think about the text.
I choose no.3
ReplyDeleteI think the second important question is no.4(What is the quality of the evidence used to support the position). That's because I learned from Meiland that I am expected to believe on the basis of good reasons which are found by gathering evidences. If the quality of evidence which support author's opinion is low,the writing is not completed. We need good evidence to judge whether the writing is agreeable or not. Therefore I think question4 is the second important.
I choose no.2.
ReplyDeleteI have had an experience like that. When I read whole "Arabian Nights" in Japanese, I could imagine very sensitive scenes like art. There are many delicate style descriptions of sights, phrases and ways of thinking peculiar to arabian. Phrases are very fluent and clear. Arabian cultures surprised me. These feelings are similar to feelings when I saw asian paintings on vases or fabrics. All of these are very sensitive and have oriental mood.
This is my experience.

ReplyDeleteI think the secound important question is No.6. (Are ay assumptions made?)It is because these days, I have a difficulty to make clear assumptions and I know these are so important for readers to understand my message effectively in writing. Also we have to make sure that every assumption is supporting the topic and are conneced each other.
Thank you to post comments.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to read Keisuke and Yuka's recommend books.
In my experience, when I was young, I read 'Momo' written by Michal Ende was immpressed me because the story was dark but the description was vivid and I could imagine the scene. It was like art I think.

ReplyDeleteI think the second most important question is NO.2.
I think it is important for the authors to show which position they choose. If they do not make their own position clear, the readers cannot understand what they want to convey. Similarly, when we write esseys, we have to show our own position clearly in order to convince the readers deeply.
I choose no.3
ReplyDeleteI think the second important question is no.4, because the quality of the evidence is very important to support authors argument and the more goood evidence author have, the more influence argument have. I think question no.1~3 and no.5 can be answerd in first reading, and no.6 is difficult to identify in second reading, so we should read more to answer it. Therefore I think no.4 is second important question in secand reading.
I chose no 3.
ReplyDeleteI think #4 is the second most important questions. I agree with Asuka's opinion. Also, Mailand said "By investigating reasons for our beliefs, we come to understand them better." So, the more eidence the writer have, the more comprete writig they can write. Therefore, by finding the evidence used to support the position, we can also understand the writing better.
Thank you for posting comments.
ReplyDeleteMany people answered No.3, and questions are different. I think It shows that readers have own points they make point of when reading, and probably, content they receive from text is also different.
I’d like to respond to #3.
ReplyDeleteI think No.3, “arguments” is secondly important.
In arguments, what the writers think of the topic is reflected.
Suppose if two writers whose positions are the same, but their arguments are quite different, then their opinions are definitely different.
To clearly state their own ideas, writers must use specific arguments.
So, arguments are important to read.
I chose No.3.
ReplyDeleteI think second most important is No.4.
As Meiland mentioned before, good reason is needed to support the auther's position.
Therefore we must have that question in mind.
I chose no.3.
ReplyDeleteI think the second most important question is no.2
It's because It is important to understand that the author shows his position during reading.
For this reason,I chose no.2.
