Meiland Discussion Questions from Group 1 (Pgs 3-7)

Choose one question to respond to, or you can respond to what someone else has posted:

1. Meiland said that in high school the emphasis is on "learning facts through memorization." On the other hand, in university the emphasis is on understanding the material deeply. Do you think that high school students should study like university students do? Why?

2. Meiland said that "the perceived emphasis in secondary education is on learning facts through memorization" (p 1-3, line 31). How was this either true or not true for you in high school?

3. Meiland states that "College is taken to be diferent from high school only in being more difficult" (p 1-4, line 7). When you were a high school student, what did you expect college to be like? How is it different from what you expected?

  1. I want to respond to question3.
When I was a high school student, I expected that college is a carefree place, because we can decide everything by ourselves. However I realized that we can decide everything by ourselves yet we have to decide everything on our own responsibility.University is different from what I expected on this point.

I don't think high school students should study like university students do. Studying deeply is good way to think more about subjects. But I think high school students should learn many things from many fields to find what they are interested in. This is why I think high school students shouldn't study like university students do.

I don't think high school students should study like university students do.
Because to study critically and deeply in university, students should know
    fundamental knowledges.
So students memorize to get the facts in high school first, and when they go to university, they will start to think is much better I think.

    In social science, or Japanese,
it is not true, in my high school.
We were assigned to write essays.

In order to write essay, students read many books, and
tried to express their own ideas.

It't not true in my school. In most classes, teachers and students don't use textbooks at all. Therefore, type of test is really different from general schools. For example, in science class, exam is not like test facts students memorized but test nature of science. In Japanese, like Masanori, students were assigned to write report or essay , so we need to read materials to gather information.

In my school, students don't learn facts through memorization but through experiments.

I don't think high school students should study like university students do because fundamental knowledges are essential for university students to discuss. However I think high school students should have chance to discuss with others.

As Fumika, Yumena and Shoko say, it is more important to know the fundamental knowledge in high school. However, do you actually remember every fundamental knowledge which you've learned? I'm not. So I think high school classes should have both memorization class and thinking deeply class!

I don't think that high school students should study like university students do because memorization is essential to understand the material deeply. That is, university students should not only memorise things but also consider the material deeply.

In my high school, most class tests are surely emphasised on meorization. However we also had times to discuss about social problems except classes. We had to look into that before discussion.

I don't think high school students should study like university students do.
Understanding the material deeply is important, but todays high scool education system of Japan aim at prepare for examination, and most of students do not have enough time to learn particular subject deeply, so high scool students only momorize fact in high scool.

I also think learning facts through memorization is important. But when I was a high school student,I spent much time for learning and I didn’t have enough time for paying attention to world affairs and thinking thoughtfully it. Considering world affairs is significant for young people. So I think high school should add the class like university to laying the foundation of thinking deeply.

It is true in my school. I think Masanori and Asuka's schools are more special than other schools. We used text books in most classes and studied subjects only for examination. Therefore we did not acquire the fundamental knowledge, and we could not be in interested in it.

My school was very similar to Takayuki's.
Our classes were so boring because we only took notes and listened to what the teachers said with textbooks. Memorising many things was really important in my school.
Unfortunately, though I made an effort to memorise a lot of things, it is hard to remember what I learned then.

My school was very similar to Takayuki's and Haruka.W's. For my high school,it is important that how many students pass the high level universities' entrance examinations.
So, we have to memorize lots of things to pass the exams.

  15. Thank you everybody for answering our quetions.

I had no experience studying like university students do while I was in high school.
I just sat and listened to teachears to prepare for entrance exam.
Therefore I thought it interesting that Masanori and Asuka's high school assighned to write report or essay.
